Volunteers sorting books for children

Ways to volunteer

There's a place for everyone

Volunteers work faithfully every week — sorting, folding, ribboning, and delivering — so that children in crisis can be comforted at bedtime with new pajamas, a cuddle pillow, and a book to read. It's both a fulfilling and fun experience for all.

Folding events

Schedule a special event with your group to help fold and ribbon pajamas, pair them with an age-appropriate book, and create donation packages ready for gifting.

Sort & organize

Sort pajamas as they arrive from drives and grants, organize them into bins by gender, size, and season, and help manage inventory and books by age range.

Delivery & pickup

Help deliver pajamas and books to children across our partner agencies, or pick up donation boxes after a drive campaign wraps up.

Make cuddle pillows

Sew little cuddle pillows that go along with each set of pajamas and a book — a small comfort that means the world to a child at bedtime.

Host a drive

Organize a pajama or book drive at your school, workplace, or organization to collect new items. See how to get started below.

Support events

Represent Angel Heart at community events, drive kickoffs, and book fairs throughout the year across Southern Arizona.

Our volunteers

The people who make it possible

Angel Heart would not be able to serve the many children in distress without the great number of volunteers who come and help faithfully throughout the year.

Volunteer spotlight

Ms. Judy Welch

A retired school nurse, Judy has volunteered since Angel Heart began in 2013. She comes in each morning to organize pajamas, wrap them with ribbon, pair each with an age-appropriate book, and prepare them for gifting — and she trains other volunteers in the art of pajama folding. Angel Heart is blessed to have her.

“Thank you, Raytheon team! A fabulous team of 30 employees from Raytheon volunteered at Angel Heart today. This wonderful team helped move locations for Angel Heart. Thank you to each of you — you are awesome. It was a wonderful day working with you. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Sincerely, Patti

Host a drive

So you're having a pajama or book drive

Thank you for supporting our mission to provide new pajamas and books to children who are homeless, abused, abandoned, or in shelters and foster care. Here's what to keep in mind to get started.

  1. Pajamas need to be new and a complete set — a top and bottom, or a nightgown.

  2. Pajamas should range from sizes 0 months to children's XXL and be flame retardant.

  3. Decide where people can drop off or send items — decorate one or more collection boxes with festive paper, or have donations mailed to your home or office.

  4. Checks can be made payable to Angel Heart Pajama Project.

  5. Request Angel Heart logos and photos to make your own fliers or displays.

  6. Advertise your drive on Facebook and other social media, and contact local newspaper, radio, and TV.

  7. Angel Heart volunteers can help with your kickoff event and pick up your donations at the end of the drive.

Want to be even more involved and see where your donations go? Consider volunteering to sort and package the pajamas and books once they're collected. To start a drive, request logos and flyers, or arrange a pickup, use the form below or reach us at john@angelheartpajamaproject.org or (916) 337-2270.

Tell us about your drive

Share a few details and we'll follow up with a drive kit, collection boxes, and everything you need to get started.

Student philanthropy

Learning to give at Wakefield Middle School

Students at Wakefield Middle School work with Angel Heart to learn the tenets of philanthropy and the skills needed to operate a nonprofit. Through project-based learning, they build a culture and understanding of giving — and establish themselves as philanthropists during Service Saturdays.

  • Students participate in Service Saturdays once a month.

  • Students read SLAM! and discuss figurative language, perseverance, and philanthropy.

  • Students read books that tie in with budgeting, philanthropy, and building community.

Little Free Libraries

Books within reach, right in the neighborhood

Angel Heart has Little Free Libraries in many of the areas where we support children. If you're interested in sponsoring or building one, get in touch — we have the specifications and designs available.
